Keeping cool under pressure
What was the challenge?
Operating in a compact site with no space for spare equipment, Cold Move needed trucks that could guarantee uptime in sub-zero conditions as low as −20°C, while keeping operators safe and comfortable.
Why this product(s)?
The trucks that make up the new fleet are built to perform in extreme cold, with heated cabs for comfort on the SENSiAs, ergonomic controls for safety, and battery systems designed to minimise downtime and energy use.
What was the outcome?
Cold Move now runs a reliable 17-truck fleet that maximises uptime, supports operator comfort, and delivers energy savings. A full-service package with monthly reports gives greater fleet control and long-term confidence.
Downtime is not an option
With no room for spare equipment, every truck at Cold Move needs to be available at all times. Operating temperatures as low as -20°C add extra strain on performance, while operators need to stay comfortable to work effectively in such conditions. Cold Move wanted to involve operators in choosing the ideal specification that could meet the demands for both reliability and operator wellbeing in a cold store environment.
We are not a big distribution centre, so downtime is not an option for us. We had already been using Mitsubishi counterbalance and reach trucks for some time, and were impressed with them, so we were keen to see other equipment and build a solid partnership with our supplier.
Built for extremes
Cold Move now has 17 Mitsubishi trucks: four SENSiA reach trucks with heated cabs for long shifts in the cold store; three electric EDiA EM counterbalances with blue lights and ergonomic mini steering wheels for safety and comfort; and ten PREMiA pallet trucks for loading and unloading. Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks also advised on battery systems optimised for cold conditions, reducing downtime during changes and supporting Cold Move’s commitment to energy efficiency.
Creating a good working relationship is fundamental. We worked closely with Simon and his team at Cold Move and invested time to establish what the drivers needed. From looking at the chassis size to discussing fixed platforms, we wanted to create a fleet that accurately reflected the site’s constraints.
A trusted partnership
Cold Move can now maximise output without worrying about downtime. Supported by Mitsubishi’s full-service package, monthly reports, and responsive engineers, the company has greater control of its fleet and confidence in its long-term performance. The new battery system brings energy savings too — a vital consideration for a Cold Chain Federation member. Together, Mitsubishi and Cold Move have built a partnership based on trust, reliability, and shared goals for safety and sustainability.
The drivers are very pleased with the trucks, and the engineers always go above and beyond whenever we call. Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks made the whole process seamless, taking every detail into account to get the right specification. They went to the effort to solve every problem we faced. It feels like we have a partner we can trust.
